What is a NOTAM?

A NOTAM is a notice that alerts flight crews to a temporary condition or change in the aviation system. The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) defines it in Annex 15 as a notice containing information on the establishment, condition, or change of any aeronautical facility, service, procedure, or hazard, the timely knowledge of which is essential to flight operations. The format is standardized in ICAO's PANS-AIM (Doc 10066). The United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issues domestic NOTAMs in this same ICAO format.

The acronym itself was updated. ICAO and the FAA changed the expansion from "Notice to Airmen" to "Notice to Air Missions" in 2021. The abbreviation "NOTAM" did not change.

A NOTAM is not a general-interest bulletin. It is a machine-parseable message with a fixed field structure, which is exactly why it can be decoded field by field.

How is a NOTAM structured?

Every ICAO NOTAM has three parts: a header, a qualifier line, and a set of lettered items.

The header carries the NOTAM number and its type. A NOTAM number looks like A1234/26 — a series letter, a sequence number, and the year. The type is one of three: NOTAMN (a new notice), NOTAMR (a notice that replaces an earlier one), or NOTAMC (a notice that cancels an earlier one).

The qualifier line is the "Q-line." It is a coded summary that lets flight-planning systems filter the NOTAM without reading the free text.

The lettered items run from A to G. They give the location, the valid times, the plain-language text, and the vertical limits.

How do you read the Q-line?

The Q-line is a single coded string that summarizes the NOTAM for automated filtering. It follows the pattern Q) FIR/Q-code/Traffic/Purpose/Scope/Lower/Upper/Coordinates.

Read it in order:

  • FIR — the Flight Information Region the NOTAM applies to, given as a four-letter ICAO indicator.
  • Q-code — a five-letter group beginning with Q. The two letters after Q name the subject; the final two name the condition or status. ICAO Doc 8126 (the Aeronautical Information Services Manual) lists the code tables. For example, QRTCA decodes as a restricted area (RT) that is activated (CA).
  • TrafficI for IFR, V for VFR, or IV for both.
  • Purpose — flags such as whether the NOTAM is for immediate attention or for flight-planning briefing.
  • ScopeA for aerodrome, E for en route, W for a navigation warning, or a combination.
  • Lower / Upper — the vertical band in flight levels, from 000 to 999.
  • Coordinates — a latitude/longitude and a radius in nautical miles marking the affected circle.

You do not have to memorize the Q-code tables to fly safely. The Q-line exists so that software can route the right NOTAMs to the right crews, and the plain-language item E always restates the substance.

What do items A through G mean?

The lettered items carry the operational content. Not every NOTAM uses every letter.

  • A) Location — the ICAO four-letter location indicator for the aerodrome or FIR affected. These indicators are assigned in ICAO Doc 7910.
  • B) Start time — when the NOTAM becomes effective, as a ten-digit date-time group in UTC.
  • C) End time — when it stops being effective, as a UTC date-time group, or PERM for permanent, often suffixed EST when the end time is only estimated.
  • D) Schedule — an optional field giving the specific times of activity within the B–C window, used when a hazard is intermittent.
  • E) Text — the plain-language description of the change. This is the field a crew reads first. It may use standard ICAO abbreviations.
  • F) Lower limit and G) Upper limit — the vertical extent of the affected airspace, expressed as an altitude or flight level, for example SFC (surface) to FL180.

How do you decode the date-time groups?

NOTAM times in items B and C are always in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), never local time. The format is a ten-digit group: two digits each for year, month, day, hour, and minute. So 2608120600 reads as 2026, August 12, 06:00 UTC.

A few standard tokens replace or modify the end time. PERM means the change is permanent. EST marks an estimated end time that will be confirmed or cancelled by a later NOTAM. In item E text you may also see WEF (with effect from), WIE (with immediate effect), and TIL (until).

  • Q-line — in the London FIR (EGTT), a restricted area is activated (QRTCA), affecting IFR and VFR traffic (IV), as a navigation warning (W), from the surface (000) to flight level 050, within five nautical miles of the stated coordinates.
  • A) EGTT — the affected location is the London FIR.
  • B) 2608120600 — effective from 06:00 UTC on 12 August 2026.
  • C) 2608121800 — until 18:00 UTC on 12 August 2026.
  • E) — a temporary restricted area for an aerial event, with entry prohibited without ATC clearance.

Reading it this way turns a dense string into a clear operational picture: where, when, how high, and what to do.

What common NOTAM abbreviations should you know?

NOTAM text uses standardized contractions to stay short. ICAO Doc 8400 (Abbreviations and Codes) is the authoritative list. A working set worth knowing includes U/S (unserviceable), ACFT (aircraft), TWY (taxiway), RWY (runway), AD (aerodrome), OBST (obstacle), AMSL (above mean sea level), and AGL (above ground level).

When an abbreviation is unfamiliar, expand it against Doc 8400 rather than guessing — a misread contraction can invert the meaning of a limit or a status.

Where does NOTAM reading fit in flight risk assessment?

Reading individual NOTAMs is a manual skill; assessing a whole route is a systems task. A single flight can be affected by dozens of NOTAMs, and the operationally significant ones — a closed runway, an activated restricted area, a GPS-interference warning — sit among routine notices about lighting and cranes.
